Curator Notes
I have been blessed to work with many artists throughout my career as a fine art consultant and
curator for private collections. Every artist has something special to say and give to this world,
but Maja Paumgarten is the first artist I’ve met that isn’t afraid to show us the beauty we see
around us daily in our lives, that we all are guilty of taking for granted. Maja takes nothing for
granted in her work and she boldly shows the viewer through her amazing color palette and soft
and heavy brush techniques conveying to us a feeling, a moment that she has experienced in
her own life. She, in turn, wants you to experience that same moment with her, and she doesn’t
want you to forget that moment. Her work is always evolving, changing with her bold subtlety
of painting. When I first approached Maja for her to be our first showing at “The Gallery” and
was explaining to her the concept of the new space. I told her I wanted big paintings! She said
she didn’t have any available for the show but in turn, brought me little colorful gemstones. I
was excited by the energy from her paintings. They are all like individual little sparkling jewels
that bounce and play together in the light. I immediately said to her that I wanted to group the
paintings in old-school European salon style. This is where the paintings are close to one
another but still hold their own wall space individually. This in turn helps to allow the kinetic
energy that plays off each individual painting and complements the other painting next to or
above its placement to all gel together. The energy starts to become a language, a dance, and a
birdsong at play so to speak, making a cohesive balance that is pure joy to the viewer’s eye. I
hope you feel the same way.
A very special thank you to Roddy O’Connor for his help with the hanging of this show as his
meticulous eye for detail allowed for this curation to become possible as I related the ideas to
him. It really shows in the final exhibition of these magical paintings.
The Gallery is very proud to be presenting Maja Paumgarten’s “Birdsong” for its inaugural
showing. Maja’s work magically speaks for itself. I’m very grateful to Maja for trusting me with
this curation of her work and trusting the process.
